WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] the entire summer had been spent wondering from place to place with her family. visiting family friends, other relatives, and sightseeing along the way. it had been a great vacation and she'd made plenty of wonderful memories. seeing new places was always fun. she's taken countless pictures over the summer, nearly running out of space on her camera despite have the largest sd card available for it. but that was just something that happened when you didn't have any way to upload them to a computer. it had been an electronics-free summer, mostly. her cell phone and her camera had been all she'd needed.
but despite all the fun she had, coming back to radiant gardens was more like coming home than going to her parent's house had been. she loved destiny islands, of course, and she loved her family, no doubt, but radiant gardens held more precious people and memories than anywhere else probably ever could. all of the friends she'd made amounted to a lot more than some house on an island. being able to see all of those friends again, that was definitely more like home than anything else could be.
adelaide sat down beneath a large oak tree, taking in a deep breath of the cooling autumn air. the leaves were beginning to change colors and fall, the air was becoming more and more crisp, and the wind was starting to bring in colder chills. fall was a lovely time of year. a perfect balance between hot and cold, most of the time, and full of beautiful sights. like golden leaves floating along in the river that wound it's way through the park.
one couldn't help but wonder what this year would bring, not after the previous had brought so much. so many things had happened then and she was sure that just as many would happen this time around as well. she'd end up loaded down with classes -that's what she got, really, for selecting two minors along with her major- and stay busy with sports. clubs would keep her occupied as well and she had no doubts that certain people would drag her about from time to time. but maybe that was what she loved about this place so much.
no matter how busy everyone got with their studies, they always made time to hang out, play some games, and generally just have some fun. she was no exception, though she wasn't nearly as outgoing as certain people she knew. they, quite literally sometimes, had to drag her out or her room or the library or wherever in order to get her to go out with them.
"this is nice drawing weather..." she mused to herself, looking up into the pretty blue sky. art was one of her minors, though she didn't draw quite as much as she wrote. still, moderate weather was always a good time to draw or paint. you didn't have to worry as much about smudges from sweat (or over heated paints) and your hands wouldn't be shaking from the cold. but she didn't have any art supplies with her today so she'd just have to settle for admiring the beauty of it all. that was fine by her, though. she didn't see herself as a very talented artist anyway.

Riku could feel the light headache throbbing just behind his eyes but ignored it as he walked through the park. He'd been cooped up in his apartment for most of the day and at the processing migraine he was acquiring he'd decided a bit of fresh air would do him well. It was a nice crisp day, even for fall. He lived weather like this and it probably helped that his birthday was coming up.
He yawned tiredly having been up for a while painting the previous night. He guessed that he could blame that for his headache. He buried into his warm sweater, running his fingers through short tresses. He still couldn't believe his mother finally convinced him to cut it. It'd been years and he sort of missed the slight weight of his long hair. His attention was caught by a girl who sat underneath a large tree. Warmth spread through him at the familiar face and a grin curled his lips up.
Approaching the girl he did over her and smiled. "now what's a cute girl like you doing all by yourself?"
He let out a little chuckle and sat down next to her, bumping his shoulder against the girl as he settled down. Happiness warmed him at seeing his long time friend. They'd talked throughout the summer, even falling asleep on the phone with each other."Hey Addie. It's good to actually see you.

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] as she sat their against the tree, looking up at the clouds and thinking about her summer, she actually began to doze off. not to the point where her head bobbed or anything, her eyes were just heavy and it was hard to keep them open. it must have been the whether, it was such a nice day and the sun was warm against her skin. she pulled a book from the bag next to her and started reading, though it didn't help to wake her up any at all. it just couldn't captivate her attention like reading normally did and she found herself ready to doze off again. before a familiar voice interrupted the quiet that had long ago settled in on her.
"eh?" the girl looked up, head tilted to one side, eyes taking a moment to fully adjust and brain taking a second or two to realize who the voice belonged to. as soon as she focused her attention on him, she was wide awake again and a smile blossomed upon her lips. "oh, you flatter me." she giggled a little as the boy sat down next to her, bumping shoulders as he did so.
adelaide had been in a perfectly good mood before but now, with her best friend at her side, she was probably happier than she'd been all summer long. her summer break had been spent all over the place and this was the first time she'd seen riku in all of that time. they'd talked on the phone, a lot, but it wasn't quite the same. something about actually sitting next to someone was so much better. "it's good to actually see you, too, riku. you're hair looks really good." this was the first time she'd ever seen his hair short like this. and it really did look good on him, she thought.

Riku couldn't wipe the grin off his face even if he wanted to not that he did. He missed his friend dearly over the summer, while they had talked till they'd fallen asleep it really wasn't the same as having her here by his side where he could see her. He was immediately calmed by her presence. “Not flattery just fact when it comes to you."
He grinned as he spoke but there was an underlying sincerity to it. Warmth boomed in him at her words but a he rubbed the back of his head awkwardly at her comment about his hair. Chuckling slightly he said, “Thanks, I've been trying to readjust with not having to tie it back anymore. It's still a little weird for me."
He flicked the tip of her nose playfully, his nose crinkling a little as he smiled at her. She'd talked non-stop about her trips during her vacation, even falling asleep while listening to him speak. It was really cute which brought him to his next teasing comment. The one that has become tradition since she first feel asleep listening to him over the phone. "You know you have this little snore when you fall asleep? It's really cute."
The wide grin on his face was proof enough that he was having far too much fun testing her about this than he should have been.

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] she rolled her eyes and waved off his comment, writing it off as more of a teasing remark than anything. he had a tendency to do things like that; teasing her. it was always well natured and she'd by lying if she said she hated it. that was just how he was, after all, and she wouldn't have him any other way.
they were the best of friends. so close that they could tell each other everything without worrying about anything (well, for the most part at least). they'd spoken so much over the summer that she'd often thought they might end up running out of topics. of course, even when the line was quiet, she didn't find it uncomfortable at all. she'd stayed up so late just talking to him, she'd fallen asleep listening to his voice. the sleep deprivation had caught up with her and she'd spent the last couple days of vacation doing nothing by lounging around and sleeping. and talking to riku, of course.
"still. it looks really good on you." she had a hard time not being honest with him, no matter what it happened to be that they were talking about. she'd never been quite so attached to anyone before. not like she was with riku. always more than happy to talk to him, spend time with him, tell him the answer to whatever question he asked. she knew why, of course, but she couldn't tell him. it was the only thing she would keep to herself. he knew everything else. unless, of course, it was just something neither of them had thought to ask about or mention at all.
her lips puckered slightly in a pout as she moved one hand up to cover her nose. "i do not snore!" she couldn't be sure about that, though, of course. it wasn't like she'd ever recorded herself sleeping, because she'd never really cared to bother with something like that. whether or not she snored at all had never been an important detail. who would there be to hear it? riku, apparently.
addie felt her face warm a little as she pushed his shoulder with her other hand (a push that did nothing more than maybe, just maybe, make him sway a bit). that first time she'd fallen asleep while they were on the phone, when she'd woken up and realized what had happened, she'd known how things would end up. and then when she'd done it again, a few times, she knew she'd never hear the end of it. "and snoring wouldn't be cute." it was too bad she'd always fallen asleep first! she couldn't even pretend that he snored!

Riku was happy Addie liked his hairstyle, a faint blush dusting his cheeks as his chest puffed out a little in pride. Sure Riku wasn't vain but he appreciated and was grateful towards compliments just the same. "Thanks Addie. That means allot coming from you."
Some if the apprehension he'd had about cutting his hair short drained away. He knew later when she wasn't around he'd be more self conscious but for now he was content. Addie's opinion always seemed to put Riku at ease. She was his closest friend, the only one he really trusted. well save for Sora now but he pulled his mind away from wandering towards the brunette. He shared everything with Addie, he never not told her anything because there was no reason to.
He laughed when she denied snoring but covered her nose. She didn't really snore but she was just so adorable and easy to tease that he couldn't resist. When she pushed him, or at least tried to be went along with it and fell over laughing. Straightening out he gave her a mock wounded look as he said, "why Addie! Are you calling me a liar?"
he really was having just having too much fun with this. Riku always thought it was cute that she fell asleep to his voice but he'd never told her that he liked listening to her sleep, it calmed him.
note; Omgh they're so cute like this I'd hate to ruin it but...maybe we should? Lol

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] she couldn't keep from feeling a bit self-conscious and worried and a bit flustered. she didn't actually know if she snored or not and she really didn't want to believe that she did. because she'd heard people who snore, at it was always loud and obnoxious and she definitely didn't want that. maybe, if she did snore, it really was some kind of quite snore that wasn't annoying at all. but, if that were the case, it would just be that she breathed a bit loud. some raspy sound that was low and quite and nothing to worry at all about.
that would be her hope, at least. oh no, what if she talked in her sleep! surely he'd have mentioned that before, if she had, so she was sure there was nothing to worry about on that front. but just the possibility of saying something while she was sleeping made her heart race a bit. there would have been no telling what she'd have said! she was beyond grateful she didn't have that problem.
"so dramatic!" she rolled her eyes as he gave her that mock wounded look, sitting back up after he'd let himself topple over, and complained about her accusations. she couldn't help but giggle at him, though, as she played along with her own bit of a mock undertone. "i can't believe a word you say, riku!" but, really, it was quite the opposite. he'd know that, of course, because she was grinning almost as much as he was. it was fun, teasing one another and generally just hanging out. she wouldn't trade it for the world.
when her phone started to ring, she almost hit decline so as not to ruin their fun. but, seeing the display, she answered it instead. there was very little talking on her part, her mother did most of the talking with the help of a couple other family members, and her face paled as she listened. her grin faded into a frown, her eyes clouded with tears, and her hands were shaking a little.
addie wasn't particularly close with the majority of her family. she'd always been more of a loner type, keeping to herself and not really socializing. and even those she was close to, she never really told then what they meant to her or anything. she just wasn't any good at expressing her emotions like that. hearing that stephen -he was one of her cousins; the cousin she was the closest with and one of the members of her family that she actually really liked and got along with- had been in an accident, hearing that his injuries had been horrible, and then hearing that he hadn't made it through the surgery; it tore her apart inside.
the phone slipped through her fingers and fell to the ground, but all she could think about was the last time she'd seen stephen. they'd gotten into a little bit of a fight and she'd refused to speak to him for the rest of the day. and then she hadn't gotten to see him the next because he'd had to leave for work really early. she'd never once told him how much he meant to her, how happy she always was to spend time with him. now he would never know. and she hadn't even gotten to say goodbye!
she couldn't keep the tears from falling, even though she really did try to. if it had been anyone else sitting beside her, she'd have seemed pretty cold-hearted. but riku knew her so well and they shared everything. it was just natural that the tears fell even with him there, because, really, him being there made that pain in her chest even worse.

Riku couldn't understand what had happened. One moment they were laughing and smiling, just joking around and having a good time. Then the next Addie was listening to someone speak over the phone and looking devastated. He let out a yelp of surprise when suddenly her phone slipped through her fingers. Catching it he brought it to his ear, hearing someone call her name. "I'm sorry, Addie isn't speaking right now...I'm Riku...Yes ma'am I'll have her call you back."
He shut off the phone and scooted closer to her. His heart torn as he watched the tears fall and roll down her cheeks. For a moment he didn't know what to do before he made soft comforting noises. Laying his palms against her cheeks as he wiped away her years with his thumbs. "Easy Di-di. It's okay, love. Whatever it is, it's okay. Just talk to me. What's wrong?"
He looked straight into her eyes, reading her pain and the torture in them. It hurt too see her like this, to see her all torn up. Most wouldn't be able to detect just how bad it was but he could tell. Whatever happened, whatever she'd been told. She was beating herself up. “Don't do this. Don't torture yourself. Whatever it is, don't."

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] addie looked up at riku, though she still couldn't stop the tears, and felt another wave of pain and guilt flood through her. his touch, his words, they did nothing but make her that much more aware of how terrible she could be. always so distant, so quiet, and never letting anyone get to close to her. she kept a straight face, rarely showed how she was really feeling, and never told anyone how much she loved them.
even this was no different. riku was an exception to everything, everything, but she still kept her feelings all bottled up. because she didn't want to ruin anything. she didn't want to lose the one person in the world that she cared about more than anyone else. did he know how much he meant to her, really, though? no. no one did. because it was so much more than him being just her best friend.
"m-my c-cousin, he-" if she said it, she'd have to accept it. right? she couldn't do that! she couldn't accept that he was dead, that she'd never see him again. but that wasn't the real problem here, not really. he could see that there was more to it than just what had ever happened to her cousin. he could tell that there was something else eating away at her and she had to bite her lip to from spilling everything to him right there. "he's gone and i never got to say goodbye."
she reached up and pressed the palm of her left hand to the back of his right, practically holding it against her cheek as she used her other hand to wipe at her eyes. "he'll never know how much he mattered because i never got to tell him." her attempt at stopping the tears didn't work, but they had slowed a bit. just a bit.

Riku was close to panicking when Addie neither said anything nor stopped crying. He didn't like seeing her like this, it hurt to see her like this. He watched her closely as she tried to get the words out before stopping. He felt his stomach drop, he was all too familiar with what those words meant. His heart went out to his best friend as she finally got the words out.
Oh Addie..." His voice was soft as he whispered her name but he didn't say he was sorry. He'd never understood that and he knew that those words never really helped. He didn't promise her that everything was going to be all right because hell, for a while it probably wouldn't feel alright and he knew right now those words would probably sound empty. He wouldn't give her an empty promise. Addie deserved more than that, especially right now.
When she laid her hand over his, he gently caressed her cheek. He leaned his forehead against hers as she wiped at her tears in a gesture of support. He would stay and listen as long as she needed him to. However her words stopped him cold and he jerked away looking into her eyes. After a moment he pulled her against him and hugged her right. “That's not true. He knew how much you cared. Even if you never said it, it's always apparently. Just like i know how much you care. He knows you loved him and I'm sure he loved you too. He wouldn't want you to tear yourself up about this Addie."
He pulled away for a second and looked her straight in the eyes, not even noticing how close they were. He was focused on her and just trying to make her understand. “Hell look at me and my family. We're as dysfunctional as it gets but even though we don't say it out show it. We know we love each other."
He decided to not mention that this excluded his father. He didn't knit what that man was about anymore sense he couldn't care less. "Addie you know I'd never lie to you. You can't think like that. I'm sure he loved you and knew you cared about him, no matter what may have happened." note:; XD i got caught up in the moment. I think this is the most emotional/serious I've ever written him lol

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] despite the turmoil raging within her, she was very much aware of the close proximity. maybe that was why she was so acutely aware of it, though. because she was struggling with herself over what to do. because she hadn't told her feelings to someone and they were gone now. she didn't want that to happen again but she was scared of the possible repercussions if she were to admit to everything and just tell him.
the warmth that spread through her almost overrode all of the pain she was feeling. almost. she let herself be held against him. it was nice to be held like that. it was warm and safe. but once she let herself actually think about it, it brought forth another rush pain. because, no matter how certain he was that he knew how much she cared, he just didn't know. he couldn't. she would die for him in a heartbeat, he could talk her into doing anything, and she loved him with every fiber of her being.
when he pulled away, she felt a little cold. but they were still so close and it felt a little heard to breath but she didn't want him let go or move away. and even though it was a bit hard to look him in the eye at this distance, she did. she knew he was trying to cheer her up, make her feel better and stop her from tormenting herself. she knew that his family life was hard and that, despite it all, he still loved them (she also knew about the situation with his father and she was glad he didn't actually mention that).
addie threw her arms around his neck and pressed her face to his shoulder. "i never say it though. and i don't show it. so i-" it was hard to not regret it. of the twenty years she'd known stephen, she'd never once told him that she loved him. or even that she cared about him. she'd always wanted to, but the words would never come out. whether he knew it or not, she couldn't help regretting never having actually said it. "so i want you to know how much i love you, riku!" it was amazing how easily those words had just slipped past her lips.
they probably came easy because she beating herself up so much about stephen. because her face was buried against riku's shoulder. because she knew that he'd take it and think it was the platonic love close friends were supposed to feel for one another. but it wasn't. it was so much more than that and, before she could stop herself, she whispered, "i really, really love you."

She looked like she was utterly distressed but he didn't understand just how distressed. He could tell that there was something else bothering her but he just didn't understand what. It was entirely frustrating him but then she started speaking again. He was having a hard time knowing what to say to her. It was like she was trying to tell him something and he just wasn't getting it.
“Addie...Addie you do show it. In your own way to show you care. We understand that you have your own way of showing it and we accept that. That's why you're so special to us." He honestly just didn't know what to tell her but he was more surprised when she wrapped her and around him and laid her head on his shoulder. He tightened his hold on her when she said she loved him and not thinking the wiser he replied with, “I love you too. I'll never leave you Addie."
However, at her quiet admittance something clicked for him. He gently pulled at her a little father from him so he could look at her in the eyes. His heart was beating fast and he could feel his emotions swirling around like a storm. Did he fell the same? He remembered the easy way they talked, the warmth that swarmed him when she was near.
He thought about their late nights together and what it would feel like if she was gone. "Addie...I...i love you too. note:; not at all. I think it flows really well :3

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] that sure was a load off. just having the words out in the open, having him know how she really felt, made her feel light as a feather. those feelings had been a heavy weight tying her down. but there wouldn't be any need to hide them now, not anymore. no matter what happened, at least he'd always know just how much she cared about him, how much he meant to her.
knowing that he knew, that she'd told him the entire truth, made her heart lighter. it still hurt, because she'd been to late to tell her cousin the truth, but it didn't hurt quite as bad. she wouldn't make a mistake like that again and she wouldn't keep beating herself up over it. she couldn't. because if she did, it would only hinder everything else. she would end up too scared to lose someone, and that would keep her from forming any bonds with other people. riku was right. her cousin wouldn't want her to do that to herself.
addie couldn't look him in the eye when he'd pulled away to look at her. she wasn't sure she wanted to see his reaction. or hear it. she was worried her confession would rip their relationship apart and she didn't want that. she'd be happy with anything, anything at all, so long as they could just stay the way they were. so long as they could keep being the best friends they'd been for about a year now. friends who could talk to each other about anything, friends who could go anywhere and do anything together, friends who could stay up until four and five in the morning talking on the phone even though they both knew they should have gone to sleep hours before.
hearing his response, though, her eyes finally lifted to lock with his, widened slightly in surprise. the tear tracks along her cheeks had dried up, her eyes only a bit watery. a smile blossomed upon her lips and she wiped her remaining tears with a hand, choking out a little laugh. it made her immensely happy to hear him say that and she found that she couldn't say anything in response. but was there really any need, anyway? but she did have something else to say to him. "without you, i'd have just fallen apart completely. thanks, riku."

Riku laughed lightly, leaning his forehead against Addie's. He was breathless and exhilarated at the realization that she loved him and...and he almost a hundred percent sure he loved her as well. He was happy, he and his closest friend cared about each other more than he'd originally thought. At her thanks he grinned at her, gently but playfully pulling a lock of her hair as he spoke. “No need to thank me. It's like i told you, I'll always be here for you. I'll never leave you. Now more than ever."
He looked into her eyes searching, he could tell she wasn't hundred percent better. At least she wasn't being herself up though and now he realized why. She loved him, even thinking about that fact made him giddy. He let another little laugh escape as he breathed out quietly, “You're amazing. I can't believe it. All this time..."
Riku didn't know what to say. What could he say?! He'd never even thought about their relationship like that until now. He was amazed and surprised, a part of him felt like it made sense. Another part...He pushed that part aside. It didn't matter, nothing mattered but the smile on Addie's face.“I want to do this properly."
He moved back a little and held get hands. Looking at her straight in the eye before he started to speak, “Addie...Will you be my girlfriend?"
He knew he had a silly grin on his face but he was serious. He wanted this, he wanted this with her.

WE TRIED OUR BEST, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. | [atrb=width,320] she felt warm and happy, a little lightheaded and like her heart might just burst. it wasn't just the requited feelings of love, it was knowing that he'd always be there and that he'd never leave. she knew he was no liar and she knew she could always turn to him, no matter what she needed. a shoulder to cry on, a secret keeper. "i'll hold you to that." her smile broadened, though not quite to a grin, and the tears dried up. she'd be fine, because riku was there beside her.
right. all this time. when was it that she'd first realized how much she really love him? it must have happened early on, though she'd originally written it off. but then she'd realized, and there had been no more denying it. and now, now she'd actually told him. she thought about doing so before, but none of her imagined outcomes had been very good. even the outcomes that went the way she'd wanted, they were nothing like this. because the imagination could only go so far.
addie's face flushed. this was probably the first time she'd felt giddy and shy about anything. but, really, what girl wouldn't be feeling that way if the guy she liked was holding her hands and asking her to be his girlfriend? "o-of course." his silly grin was contagious and she couldn't help but giggle as she answered him. |
