Lillinette Hurston, preferably Lily, a cheerful ten year old, was skipping through town. Her current whereabout was the Town Square. Humming a nonsensical tune, her head was bobbing back and forth, seeing if any of the shops looked particularly interesting. Sure they were the same stores all the time, but her preferences certainly didn't. One day, she may want to look at dolls. Others she might be itching to see all of the cute pets in the pet shop, Down the Rabbit Hole. Today, however, none of the buildings intrigued her. Lily was uncertain if she was really in the mood for anything that was in the Town Square. If that was true, then she'd have to find something else.
Her revelation made her frown for a moment. She almost immediately got rid of it, a determined look in its place. "There's no way I'm going to be down about this! There are loads more fun place to go in town besides the Square, so I have nothing to be upset about! Oh, I probably rotted my soul a bit there.." she thought. Taking a deep breath, she started to run from the Town Square. Running got her places faster, right? And she wanted an entertaining place fast! With no real destination, Lily was basically going in a general direction, taking a few rights and lefts here and there when possible. Of course, she made sure not to stray from town, that would be really bad! Even so, she was sure her brother or parents would find her, her friends would look too. Nonetheless, she'd better not worry people with a disappearance, that would surely make their souls rot!
Caught up in her thoughts, Lily's run came to a halt when she ran straight into the thick trunk of a tree. Falling backwards, her hand immediately went to her head, her face scrunched up in pain.
"Owwie..." she said, rubbing her forehead. Bringing her hand down to support herself and stand up, she noticed something. Looking at her hand again, she gasped at what was there. "Blood...?!" Touching her forehead again, she confirmed that she was indeed bleeding.
"I must have cut myself when I bumped (ran) into the tree," she concluded out loud. Taking a look around, initially with the intention of finding something that could work as a sort of band aid, or perhaps someone with a band aid, she found her mouth forming an "O", her cut completely forgotten about. Apparently, she'd ended up at the park, and it looked like a very appealing place to play right now. A bright smile forming, she was so excited that she almost jumped up from her sitting position. Lily's happiness paused momentarily. She needed another person to play with if she wanted to do any kind of game, and as the thought crossed her mind, a certain person's name came right away, almost naturally.
"Satoshi." Taking off in a sprint, her destination was clear this time: Crescentwood. This was where Satoshi usually was, and should be. If not, then, well, she was just having a stroke of bad luck. But no matter, she should be able to track down Satoshi either way. He would never pass up a chance to play with her, right? Unless he was with Ichijo.. But even then, she'd definitely join them! Someone needed to make sure the eight year old boy knew that Ichijo was in love with her, and not him. It was for his own good, really. No need for any kind of unnecessary heartbreak. Even if Ichijo hasn't admited his affections yet, she was sure he was only worried about Satoshi's reaction, or maybe he's just embarrassed or something. Lily had never been sure on the reason the older boy kept denying his feelings, but they didn't really matter. She knew he loved her, and that was all that mattered.
Having absorbed herself in thought again, she had arrived in Crescentwood already without her own realization. Quickly navigating herself around to Satoshi's house, she found it within a few minutes by mere memory. Hopping up to the door, she promptly rung the door bell and waited for someone to answer it. With any luck, it'd be Satoshi so she could get right to the point.

Satoshi had just finished up his homework. His French homework. Now, he really didn't like homework in general, so the task had been tedious in and of itself. And French? Well, he wasn't very good at French. He loved the language and really wanted to learn it but, for some reason, he just couldn't get the hang of it. And because of that, he was a straight 'C' student when it came to that class. Even though he studied hard and did his very best. All he seemed to manage was a 'C'. With a sigh, he got up from his desk and headed out of his room and down the stairs. He really needed something to munch on. Chips maybe. Or a bag of candy perhaps. Or, if they had any left, some Pocky. Better yet, he decided he'd get a little bit of all three. Especially the chips and Pocky. Wait, would Pocky be considered candy? He shrugged the question off and continued on his way, down the stairs and into the kitchen. Straight to the pantry. After rambling through the pantry for a few moments, he pulled out a bag of Sour Cream and Onion Ruffles, some Strawberry Pocky, and a bag of Twizzlers. "That should do it," he mumbled sticking a Pocky stick into his mouth before closing the pantry door. With a little sniffle, he headed back towards the stairs, only to stop when he heard a knock at the front door. Part of him wanted to ignore it so that he could go back to his room and study his French (and because he wasn't supposed to go answering the door when his parents weren't home. The other part of him, obviously the larger part, wanted to see who was at the door. There was no reason in particular for this, not really. Then again, perhaps the urge to see who it was came from subconsciously knowing who was waiting on the other side. That was pretty unlikely though, really. I mean, how could he know who it was, subconsciously or otherwise? Unless he was psychic. And he certainly wasn't psychic. Peeking out of the window first, he opened the door with a big grin on his face. "Oh, hey Lily! What are you doing here? How are you?" The pause that followed was much too brief to receive an answer from the young girl. (The stick of strawberry Pocky had fallen from his mouth, forgotten.) "I know! Wait here a minute would you? I'mma go get a few things. I'll be right back, promise!" With that, he headed off to his room, leaving the front door standing ajar. When he got to his room, he grabbed one of his backpacks, an empty one. Shoving the goodies he'd grabbed before into the bag, he headed back down the stairs and to the kitchen. Rambling through the pantry again, he added some Jalapeno Cheddar Cheetos, Salt and Vinegar Ruffles, Chocolate and Strawberry Pocky (both jumbo sized), and a bag of BlowPops to the bag before moving to the refrigerator. From there, he added a few bottles of water (some Aquafina and some various Vitamin Waters) to his collection. Tossing the bag over his should (with another sniffle) he skipped back to the front door where he pulled his jacket and scarf from a hook. Stepping out onto the porch and closing the door behind him, he sat his bag down beside him so he could put on his jacket. As he did this, he began to speak, "So what did you come by for? I think I'm going to head to the park. Unless you want to play or something. Then I guess the park can wait 'till later." He wrapped his scarf around his neck, sniffled again, and picked his bag back up. (Again, no time for her to reply.) "Do you want to go to the park with me, Lily? It wouldn't be any fun by myself. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm just glad to see somebody! I'm not actually supposed to be going out or anything because my mum's worried I'll get really sick again. But I'm really bored so I wanna go play. I did it again, huh? Sorry."Finally, he stopped talking. The eight year old scratched the back of his head, embarrassed by how he'd acted. Now, he was always open and friendly but he didn't usually go off and ramble like that. He normally gave people plenty of time to reply to anything he said or asked. Guess he really was happy to see someone he could play with rather than someone looking for his mum. He sniffled again. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTES; Okay. It was a few minutes before she heard the turning of the doorknob from the inside. A bright smile forming on her face, the door finally opened, revealing Satoshi. Lily's smile grew wider and happier. So her luck wasn't that bad! Satoshi was actually the one to answer it. However, before she could get a single word in, he started talking with a greeting. Opening her mouth yet again as he finished his standard introductory questions, the blonde girl was ceased for a second time.
The eight year old boy had disappeared almost instantly as he finshed speaking, leaving her standing there, still in position to speak. As he was inside, Lily noticed the door was left wide open. Seeing as there wasn't much for her to do, she peered inside. It couldn't count as eavesdropping, or spying, since the door was left open. Or, at least that was her reasoning. Sticking her head in slightly, while she'd been in his house before, it was still interesting to simply sweep her gaze across the entire area around the front door. Why? Well, it wasn't her house, so she wasn't completely used to it or anything.
Stepping back outside fully, she was just in time to see Satoshi reappear. She stepped out of his way as he came outside, and waited for him to put his jacket on. He went into a talking spree (as she liked to call it) again, and Lily got very anxious as he continued on. When he finally finished, a wide, excited grin was in place.
"Satoshi must be some kind of psychic! she thought. "That, or we're just so close to each other, that our minds are thinking in sync and we happened to be excited to share our ideas with each other!" Her thoughts were exciting her. A lot. So much, that she literally began jumping up and down a little.
"Oh my gosh, Satoshi! We must have been thinking, like, the same exact thoughts! I came all the way here to ask you to come and play with me in the park! I just happened to end up there by chance when I was bored of the Town Square, and who better to invite so I'm not lonely?" she asked. Before he could talk, it was her turn to not let him get a word in. "You of course! So come on, let's get going before the day wastes away! And don't worry about your mum's worries for now, it's no good to be all bored in a house sick! that rots your soul! And your soul rotting is even worse than getting sick. So let's go to the park right now!"
So exhilarated, she couldn't contain herself. She grabbed Satoshi's hand, and started to run with him in tow,. She had so much energy! The park was just waiting for them, so they'd better get there really really fast! And that meant, running. Hopefully, Satoshi could keep her pace. Even if he couldn't well, she was holding onto his hand, so the speed was on her anyways. Like.. a tow truck and a car. The speed is based on who was in front, and that was her. satisfied with her resolve, Lily continued on her way to thei destination.

Satoshi had been dead on when he'd asked if she'd come to play. Even his mention of the park was some psychic stroke of luck. How he had decided on that particular location to go and play when he hadn't original planned to go out was perplexing. But he didn't linger on those thoughts for very long. He wasn't a psychic, or, at least, he didn't think he was, so it had to have been pure coincidence. Still, coincidence or not, it was pretty cool that the two of them were on the same page before even speaking to one another. This time, it was his turn to stand there a bit anxiously as Lily went into a talking spree. He didn't mind that, of course, because he had done the same thing in his own excitement. Even after his friend finished speaking, he didn't get the chance to say anything. Before even a word could slip passed his lips, he was being dragged away from his house and towards the park. At first, thanks to the surprise, he stumbled about before finally finding his footing and trying to keep up with the young girl. Sounds pretty simple, yeah? Well, it wasn't. He had strong legs (he was a killer swimmer after all) but his body overall wasn't the strongest out there. While he managed to keep up just fine at first, he felt his lungs begin to burn rather quickly. Not only did his heart beat faster than was normal, but he was also carrying a bag loaded with snacks and bottles of water. It certainly didn't help that he had the sniffles. Sinus problems and needing to breath didn't work very well together. But he didn't say a word as they made their way closer and closer to the park, their destination. Instead, he focused more on taking as many deep breaths as he could. Because he didn't want to pass out or anything like that. That would be horrible. And Lily probably wouldn't know just what to do about it. Well, okay, she'd probably know to call 911 but, chances are, that was the limit to her knowledge of a situation like that. When the two of them reached the park he tugged his hand away from hers and bent over, hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. He was wheezing a bit, and sniffling, but he would be fine after he caught his breath (which might take a while, but still). He reached into his front left pocket, only to find it empty. After that, he began to search his other pickets, finally finding what he was looking for within his right cargo pocket. He could have sworn he'd put it in his left front pocket, he always did. Dropping the bag he'd been carrying to the ground at his feet, he pulled the inhaler from his pocket and, as he took another deep breath, he squeezed it. It helped, quite a bit, but it didn't make the sniffles go away. It was too bad, really. Sometimes he wished he wasn't so fragile. Scratch that, he just plain wished he wasn't so fragile. There was no sometimes about it. "So," he stopped to take another breath, "where exactly... are we going... Lily-nee-san?" He grabbed the strap of his bag and stepped forward, sniffling for the hundredth time since stepping out the front door of his house. Lily would, no doubt about it, see the little frown on his face but it wasn't easy for him to smile when he couldn't breath. Maybe she wouldn't freak out too much when she saw it. You know, with the whole 'rots your soul' business she always goes on about. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTES; I figured that, since we decided on a 'like family' relationship, he'd call her big sister. When the green hills and grass of the park came into view, Lily only picked up her pace. They were almost there! It was like a race, and it was the final sprint. So, naturally, with that metaphor in mind, Lily sprinted. Once her feet came in contact with the park grounds, she felt Satoshi pull his hand away, and it made her spin around to face him. Concerned, she noticed he was wheezing. Had she made him run too much, or too fast? She watched as he looked around his pockets, and finally produced his inhaler. He inhaled from it, then seemed to feel better. A smile growing bigger on her face, she listened as she asked her where they were going. His breath was steadying, and Lily would have happily replied. However, there was one thing she saw.
"Satoshi! Stop that frowning right now! Oh no, don't you know your soul is rotting right now?! That's not good, that's not good, that's not good, that's not good! Smile! Satoshi Konoe, I command you to smile! If your soul rots enough, you become sad and depressed! You have no feelings and the world seems bleak! So bleak, that the thoughts of dying come in! You don't want to die do you?! I don't want to to die! So smile!" she exclaimed. A frown was building upon her own face upon the thought of Satoshi's soul rotting. Immeditely, she set it to a determined one instead. While she wasn't too sure what she was determined to do, it was better than frowning.
Taking a deep breath, Lily did her best to compose herself. Closing her eyes, she tried to think of happier thoughts. "Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, happy thoughts..." she chanted in her head. Her face became as bright as usual soon, thankfully, as she then focused on why they were here.
"Anyways, Satoshi, we're already here! The park! It's where we'll play all sorts of games and just, I don't know, talk? Oh, and also, let's stay out of the trees... You know, there are chances that they will fall on us, or something," she said. Lily's smile stayed intact, but her mind wandered. "Hopefully, Satoshi doesn't want to go in the trees. there are bugs there! My soul always rots a little when they come into my sight! Even if I try my hardest..." she thought. Her frown pout however, was mental, so it didn't do anything to her soul, right? Right. Psychologically calm, all that was left was for Satoshi to respond.

Well, he'd pretty much seen that coming. She'd gone off on him about frowning before so it didn't surprise him one bit that she did it now. Of course, he didn't believe his soul was rotting, not one bit. But he wouldn't tell her that. No way. It was something she believe in so completely that, no matter how much he tried, he wouldn't be able to get her to believe anything else. It would be a pointless battle. Kind of like telling her their friend Ichijo wasn't madly in love with her. Then again, he couldn't say that without certainty anyway because he had no idea how the thirteen year old felt. Not about himself and not about Lily. And he'd never know for certain either, not unless the junior high student told him. So, until then, he'd probably just keep quiet about that too. Unless she brought it up first. Because even though he knew it was pointless, he always retorted with something when she mentioned the love she and Ichijo shared. Why? Well, because Ichijo loved him right? he wasn't really sure why, actually. He just felt defensive when the subject was brought up and she told him that Ichijo just didn't want to hurt his feelings. Anyway, back onto the topic at hand, shall we? Lily finished her little rant about his soul rotting and she told him to smile. He just stared at her for a second, mostly because she herself was frowning. He may have mentioned that, but she already knew that her own soul was rotting so there was no point. He forced himself to smile a bit and raised an eyebrow, "But I wasn't sad. I though your soul only rotted when you're sad, not just because of a frown. Most peoples mouths form frowns naturally don't they?"It was a fair question, in his mind. After all, when he took a deep breath and relaxed his face, his lips always turned down just a bit. He knew that some people had a natural smile, too, of course. He just wasn't one of them. Satoshi focused his attention back to Lily as she told him her plans to play games and talk. He loved games, so he was all for the idea. And talking wasn't a bad idea either. He liked talking to Lily and the rest of his friends. He was able to get to know them better that way. "What kind of games, Lily-nee-san? There's only two of us so tag and hide-n-seek wouldn't be much fun, would they? And I don't think the trees would just fall on us outta nowhere. They haven't fallen yet. But don't worry, we can stay 'way from 'em. I don't mind."A grin made it's way to his face, despite having to sniffle once again. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTES; Quite a bit shorter than my last post. Lily was able to truly smile when she saw Satoshi start to smile. Both their souls were saved! However, before she could truly celebrate and move on, Satoshi made a very wise comment, in her opinion.
"But I wasn't sad. I though your soul only rotted when you're sad, not just because of a frown. Most peoples mouths form frowns naturally don't they?"
She stood there, still and silent for a moment. She blinked owlishly as the information processed. Frowning didn't rot your soul... being sad did! A hysterical laugh came out of her mouth, and she doubled over, clutching her stomach. She was being a little paranoid there, wasn't she? Recovering from her fit, she wiped a few stray tears from her eyes. they were caused by laughing hard, though, so her soul didn't rot then, did it?! Laughing was good, and happy, soul rotting can't happen when you're happy! Reassured, Lily looked up at Satoshi.
"I guess you're right, actually. You're so smart! I was getting a bit panicky there for a second. I really don't want to risk your soul rotting, or anything like that, you know?" Flopping onto her back and spreading her arms, the 5th grader stared at the clouds. Hearing Satoshi's comment on there only being two people, meaning not many games can be played, she simply shrugged.
"Well, that's true, I guess. Maybe games will have to wait until another day. For now, why don't we just sit here and talk? There are always interesting things to say, aren't there?!" she exclaimed. It seemd to be true. No matter what the situation, Lily could never be at a loss for topics. Sure, the ones she may bring up don't always go along with the previous subject, but at least there isn't any kind of awkward silence. Silence was just plain boring. She was sure glad it wasn't usually silent with her friends! Speaking of which, Satoshi was bound to respond soon...

It seemed that his point struck a chord with his female friend. Why? Because she thought about it for a moment after he said it and she seemed to realize how valid his point was. Better still, she completely agreed with him. Okay, maybe not completely, but she still agreed with him. And that was what he'd been hoping would happen. After all, it would have been a pointless comment on his part is she'd disagreed. After the girl flopped onto her back and looked up at the clouds, he dropped to his knees next to her. His face was a bit red, whether out of embarrassment or the cool wind hitting him it was hard to tell. "I'm not all that smart. Not as smart as you are Lily." After that, he sprawled out on the grass, too, and looked up at the stars. He reached up to the sky and used his index finger to trace the outline of the clouds. There was a brief silence between the two of them, only a few seconds long, before the topic moved to what they would do now that they were at the park. It was basically decided that the two of them would just talk, since there weren't any games the two of them could play. Not that he could think of, at least. I mean, if they needed to, the could have come up with something else to do. But talking was fine with him and, no doubt about it, fine with Lillinette as well. Hmm, but what to talk about? They had a lot in common but some of those things didn't make the best conversations. They also had their differences, or course, and most of those would end up in the two of them debating back and forth. There were so many options. So then why couldn't he think of a topic to bring up? "Yeah, just talking sounds good to me. So, whadda ya wanna talk about? What we did yesterday? School?" He paused long enough to sniffle, "Or somethin' else? There's lots of other stuff we could talk about too." He sniffled again as he finished, continuing to trace the clouds with his finger. He giggled when he spotted, and traced the outline of, a cloud that was shaped like a big, fat cat. Lily giggled as Satoshi tried to deny her comment. Still lying on her back, she started to somewhat tap the ground with her feet. As a growing ten year old girl, it was only natural for her to be a bit fidgety and all. Besides, getting up and running around was one of her most favorite activities ever, and the little girl was almost amazed she hasn't started bouncing up and down in her chair at dinner. Actually, she hoped that she never did dothat, since then her mom would start yelling at her and getting all fussy. That would be annoying, and totally avoidable. Turning her head up towards Satoshi, she started giggling again, however that diet stop her from talking at the same time.
"Hehe, Satoshi! You and me are both smart! Equals in almost every way, ya know? Don't be degrading yourself. Ever. Especially not when it concerns me or I'm around," she said. Her voice took on a slight tome of authority, and she wanted her message to be firm and clear. Degrading yourself was almost as bad as being sad and came almost hand in hand with it. You know what that means? Soul rotting! So no degrading, not ever. Hopefully Satoshi would listen to her, since it would be super bad if his soul rotted.
As he laid down on the grass beside her, Lily stopped her foot tapping and listened. Hm, what would they talk about? School and what they did yesterday-no offense to Satoshi or anything- seemed pretty boring. So she dismissed those ideas. Maybe they could talk about the most exciting thing they'd done all day. Although, what if Satoshi hadn't done anything really exciting? Come to think of it, Lily hadn't done anything exciting either so that idea was no good. Maybe they could talk about their greatest achievement! She wasn't sure what Satoshi would say, but her's was definitely saving a butterfly. Normally, she hated insects and bugs and all of the little things that crawled on the ground and in the dirt. However, the butterfly was caught in a spider web. The rest of the class had been just beginning to go inside. Lagging behind, Lily was the only one who'd noticed it. The butterfly had been very colorful, and it looked rather happy too. Except, the spider certainly didn't! It didn't seem right to let the pretty winged creature die, so as fast as she could, she rushed over to the web, broke through it with ease, cupped the butterfly between her hands, and set it free. It looked so much better flying away, and it made her feel accomplished and warm inside. Although she got scolded for not sticking with he rest of the class, she didn't try to explain herself. Bragging as bad, and bad things rotted your soul... Right? Or at least her thoughts were something like that.
Snapping back to the present, she realized she'd been spacing out for quite some time. Looking over at Satoshi, she almost expected to see an odd expression on his face due to her lack of talking. But she didn't. Instead, he was focused on the sky, his finger pointing upwards. Wordlessly following his gaze, she saw the clouds. Was he trying to reach for them? They did seem rather close... If you jumped high enough, the ten year old imagined it would be witw easily to grab one of them out of the sky. Her face lighting up and her eyes coming to life with excitement, she exclaimed,
"Satoshi! I know! Why don we try to catch clouds?! Or,"glancing at the sky again before she continued, "maybe chase them since it seems they're moving pretty fast. What'd you say?"
