If you apply for a certain type of room but there are no more left then you'll be put into another room. For example, if you want a single room but there aren't any left then you'll get a double room [and possibly a roommate]
Single rooms are small, as the name suggests. Your bed is lofted with your [computer] desk located underneath it, on the opposite side of the room is a dresser and to the side of that is a small closet.
Double rooms are a lot bigger than single rooms due to the fact that they house more that one person. Your beds can be lowered or raised to accommodate who's living in that particular room, each student gets their own [computer] desk and chair as well as their own closet and dresser. Double rooms also get their own bathroom
