Find a Way...
Riku was in his usual place or at least his second usual place, curled up on the sofa with his glasses on and a book in his hands. He’d been like that for most of this lazy day and he was content with the idea of remaining this way. Classes and work had drained him and he’d just wanted to relax on one of his only free days so he was determined to stay this way. He glanced up at the sound of his phone’s text message alert and gave the contraption a thoughtful look before looking back at his book and ignoring it. It was probably one of his friends trying to drag him outside anyway. He let out a little sigh as he shifted on the sofa or rather sofa bed, having pulled the bed out from it earlier and curled up in it to read. He let out a little hum before his mind started drifting into dangerous territory…blue eyed, gravity defying brown hair territory. He let out a low annoyed grunt and scowled at the book before shaking his head and ridding his thoughts of who’d come to be his best friend.
Just then his phone bleeped again to signal another incoming text message. A small frown touching his lips for a second as his mind tried to figure out who’d be so insistent in their text messages before it dawned on him. There was only one person who’d be doing that and instantly he was reaching for his phone without thought before stopping himself and scowling at his hand. He was avoiding the brunette for heaven’s sake, reading the text message would just make him want to talk to him. With a soft huff he collapsed on to his back and tried to focus back in on his book but another alert from his phone made it so that it was impossible. He hesitated for only a second before snatching his phone up and opening it to read the text messages.
From: Sora! To: Riku Subject: HI Hey! Want to hang out? Me and Roxas were thinking about going to the soccer field.
Riku snorted in amusement at the word choice. He was sure that it was Sora who wanted to go and Roxas was just tagging along to humor the brunette. Shaking his head a little, a small smile playing along his lips, he continued to read the text messages sent by the brunette,
From: Sora! To: Riku Subject: D= Riiiikuuuuuuu. Are you busy? Why haven’t you been answering? Come to the soccer field.
The silverette felt a twinge of guilt and sighed, he really needed to at least answer. It was bad enough he’d been ducking the brunette as of late. Did he really need to duck his texts and calls too? Running a hand through his hair he opened the next text message.
From: Sora! To: Riku Subject: Soooo What are you up to?
It was a simple enough question but it seemed to tug at Riku’s chest. Knowing the reason it was just one sentence was because he’d refused to answer. Letting out a low groan he hit the reply button and typed out a message. He’d written that he was home, relaxing and that he was sorry he hadn’t seen the text until then. (Which was true, so he shouldn’t feel as guilty as he did in that moment) He pulled at the collar of his loose t-shirt, hiking up his pants a little so it wasn’t hanging precariously from his hips anymore as he lay back down to wait for Sora’s reply. He didn’t have to wait long as there was soon another alert.
From: Sora! To: Riku Subject: GOOD =D oh good! See you soon!
Riku frowned down at his phone, not understanding what Sora meant. Shaking his head dismissively he threw his phone back on the bed and looked back at his book. It hadn’t been long ago that he’d home to realize his feelings for the brunette and he was adamant in denying them. This was his way of denying them, avoidance. Unfortunately, for him fate had other ideas as not but three minutes later he heard keys jingling and loud laughter before his door burst open. Seeing as he was lying on his back, he tilted his head and saw what he hadn’t expected to see. In his doorway were Sora, Roxas and Axel with an assortment of snacks and drinks. Seeing as he was looking at them upside-down, his head tilted so that he didn’t have to move onto his stomach to see them, he arched an eyebrow at them. He gave them a thoroughly unimpressed look while on the inside he was cursing himself for giving Sora a key and forgetting he HAD said key considering the brunette rarely came over anymore.
Sora’s eyes locked onto his and he felt his heart do a little flip, as aqua blue searched his aquamarine ones for a second trying to search for something before a grin stretched across the brunette’s lips. Sometimes he hated that Sora knew exactly what he needed even if he didn’t know it. He hadn’t realized it but he’d dearly wanted company, just not the kind his usual group of friends provided. However, he’d never really hung out with Roxas and Axel before…well he’d spoken with Roxas just not since he’d started dating the red head.
“Yo Snowflake! Sor was just telling us you were moping around your apartment being all sulky and shit! So I, being fucking awesome and shit, suggested we bring the party to you.”
Riku snorted as Sora let out an indignant squawk and jumped on the red head, calling him a liar and hitting him but there was an obvious playfulness. Roxas rolled his eyes and sat down on the pulled out bed next to Riku, the silverette’s attention switching to him and he quirked an eyebrow at him as he asked, “Snowflake?” The blonde let a sheepish grin grace his lips before shrugging unapologetically, “He heard me call you that when I was talking to Sora. He adopted it.”
Riku’s eyes rolled up to the ceiling in a ‘why me’ kind of way before his attention was yanked back to his other two occupants when both red head and brunette collapsed on top of him, making a small ‘oof’ sound escape. He playfully cuffed Sora over the head, earning a grin from the brunette before he kicked the red head off the sofa bed. “Close my damn door, asshole.”
“Bitch.”
“Fire hydrant.” This earned a soft chuckle from Roxas, to which Axel threw him a mocking hurt look. Riku set his book aside and shifted on the bed, forcing Sora to get off of him as he reached for the bags they’d carried over to the bed. He gave them a curious look as he noted all the alcoholic beverages it contained before looking into the snack bag. All the snacks were perfect for being drunk or smoking and if Riku remembered Axel once in a while liked to dabble in weed. He caste a suspicious glance at the red head who put his hands up in a defensive gesture. “Chill! I promised Roxas I wouldn’t fuck with it anymore.” Riku nodded his head satisfied before pulling out a beer and leaning back on the bed now containing both he, Roxas and Sora while Axel sat on the floor by Roxas.
He grinned and laughed as he and Axel spoke about everything that had happened in the week, sharing stories and swapping crazy drunk mishaps. He glanced at Sora now and again, catching the brunette staring at him with a strange smile on his face and he’d give the brunette a questioning look but Sora would just shake his head and go back to Roxas. Twelve shots and six beers later, Riku was pleasantly buzzed and laughing as Axel made kissing noises at Roxas, who pushed his boyfriend’s face far away from him or at least was trying to. Sora was laughing beside Riku, leaning against the silverette’s shoulder as he ate a pork bun. Riku enjoyed the warmth Sora seemed to radiate and allowed the brunette to stay where he was besides he didn’t really want to avoid the brunette with how nice he was feeling. Riku studied the laughing male for a moment before he lightly touched his arm, drawing Sora’s attention to him. “Thank you…”
Sora gave him a goofy grin before Axel tackled them, leading to him and Riku getting into a wrestling match. It was pretty close but Riku won when he elbowed the taller male in the stomach, causing his breath to leave him. Sora yelled it was his turn and before Riku knew it he was tackled to the sofa bed as they laughed and wrestled around, knocking into Roxas and causing the other two boys to join in. It was obvious to say both smaller males won since Riku and Axel had tired each other out previously. They laid on the bed, a mass of tangled limbs and heavy pants after their tussle. Roxas looked at the time and declared it was time for him to go, having been the only one who hadn’t actually drank. He was the responsible one for them, Axel protested at first before willingly going along when Sora said he’d stay behind with Riku who was already starting to drift off. Riku barely registered the sound of a closing door and the clicking of locks when he opened his eyes to see Sora biting at his lip.
He watched the brunette carefully before he asked, “What’s wrong?” The brunette jumped slightly startled by Riku’s coherent words that were nothing like the slurring words from only seconds ago. They stared at each other for a while, Sora with nervous blue eyes and Riku with half lidded aquamarine ones. “It’s nothing…I just…well I thought you were angry with me earlier.”
Riku was quiet for a moment as he seemed to stare past Sora before patting the spot behind him. He noticed Sora’s eyes cloud over with…something before he nervously walked over. Sitting at the edge of the bed and making Riku snort, as he tugged the boy’s shirt so he’d look at him. Sora gave him a quizzical look and Riku pointed to something in the corner of the room covered by a sheet. Sora gave him a questioning look before going over to it and pulling off the sheet gently, revealing a beautiful painting. Sora recognized it as one, Riku had been working on for months. The older boy had said it was from a memory he kept having in a dream and Sora had never understood until now why he’d been so frustrated in getting it right. It was a boy with gravity defying brown hair staring out at the sea with a papou fruit in his hand. He looked back at Riku to see the silver headed boy watching him carefully.
“But…but this is me!” Riku nodded slightly before he said, “Remember we looked so familiar to each other? You were one of the Island kid’s I used to sneak away from home to play with. We knew each other as kids.” A small smile played on the silverette’s lips and Sora laughed, lying across Riku’s belly roughly so he could still look at the painting. Riku flicked his ear in exasperated annoyance before looking at the painting as well. It had been ironic when he finally made the connection between the boy in the painting and the boy who was now there with him. Riku huffed softly, having hard time breathing with the boy on his stomach. He poked Sora’s side, earning and surprised yelp that was almost a laugh. “You’re heavy, move it. I’m putting you on a diet after this.’
Rikuuu. You’re being meaaaan.” Said silverette made a disgusted face at the brunette’s whining, earning his a pinch for his troubles. He poked Sora’s side again and that earned him both a laugh and a whack to his hand. Getting an evil grin he started tickling the younger male’s side until he was completely off the bed, sprawled out on the floor. Riku stuck his tongue out at the brunette playfully before he said, “You can sleep exactly where you are tonight.”
Sora puffed out his cheeks indignantly before sticking his tongue out. “You’re a mean drunk.”
Riku chuckled as he settled into the bed, scooting over as he knew the brunette would find his way into the sofa bed whether he wanted him to be there or not. “And you’re an idiot. That evens everything out.” He heard Sora scoff and a part of him wished he hadn’t taught the boy so many things about having witty comebacks and sarcasm. “Let’s be honest here you need to get la-”
“Sora…”
“Yeah?”
“Shut up.” He heard the brunette chuckle at his exasperated tone before everything was quiet. He felt the previous buzz slowly start to envelop him again as his mind slowed for sleep. He felt the dip of the sofa bed on the opposite side before he heard Sora softly call his name. He hummed lightly to let the brunette know he was listening before turning around and facing the brunette. They were a foot apart but if Riku reached out he could touch the brunette. He was jolted from his thoughts when Sora spoke again. “I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
Riku felt a pang in his chest at the brunette’s words and he gave him a small smile. Sora could always find a way to just know what to say. Sighing lightly and closing his eyes he murmured quietly, “I’m glad to. Now please, go to sleep.” The brunette chuckled softly at Riku’s exasperated tone, the lights already dim that’s to earlier today before it gotten dark. “Night, Riku.” Riku sighed contently before murmuring a soft goodnight, oblivious to the last words that left Sora’s mouth after he’d wished him a goodnight.
