I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
After his 'Gender and Sexuality' class ended, he had headed straight to work. His job as a bartender was probably one of the top reasons he always dressed so nicely for school. What with needing to head off to work after class on most days. Of course, he was also a business major and needed to look the part so that was another, much more important, reason for it all.
Today's attire consisted of the usual loose black pants but, unlike the day before, todays shirt was a light green shade and his tie was a dark green to match. His clothes always matched in this fashion. Why? Well, because it matched really well and he could fit the colors to how he was feeling or what he was planning to do. You know, if he wanted to match his morning mood to his clothes. Which he usually didn't.
With his dark brown hair brushed back away from his face and his glasses perched upon his nose, he probably looked a little bit different than usual. It wasn't the hair, because he often brushed it back for work. No. It was the glasses. He normally only wore them when he planned to be reading for extended periods of time. For some reason, he had been wearing them for the majority of the day today. He wasn't quite sure why, himself.
Right now, a white apron was added to his regular clothes, tied semi-loosely around his waist. He never spilled anything on himself but the apron was handy for wiping his hands and things like that. Currently, he was leaning against the inside of the bar, 'polishing' a glass with a rag. The dance club was always pretty busy but at the moment, there weren't very many people at the bar itself. Most were sitting at tables or dancing on the dance floor.
If not for work, he'd be out there dancing as well. Mingling with the other people there, men and women alike. As it was, he could only stand around and pass out drinks when someone ordered something. Water. Soda. Alcohol. They had just about everything. He wasn't a big drinker, himself. He had bought a drink or two once and it just wasn't something he'd do very often. If he ever did it again at all.
Akira's eyes followed everyone that came into the establishment, deciding whether or not he was interested in them at all. So far, there had been a few. That was about it though. And none of those people had come over to the bar. It was too bad, really. It meant he probably wouldn't get to chat with any of them. And he didn't really plan to stick around here once his shift was over.
He should probably head home, really, and get some work done there. 'Let's see... homework, laundry, dishes.' Yeah, he'd have fun for sure.

This chaos, this calamity, this garden once was perfect, give your immortality to me; I'll set you up against the stars | Hei-Lin Haruki. The second year student who was currently skipping towards her destination. Her keen eyes, while focused forward, were on the look-out for possible bishounens for her to interact with. A few people caught her eye last year, but no one really special. This year, she hoped things would be much better.
Granted, she was a first year last year, so she didn't get much time to truly look around the campus. Her main focus was learning the location and the people in it. That, as well as her studies, took up her whole freshmen semester for the most part. Her second year was going to be much better. Oh yes, much better. A giggle found it's way to her mouth as she thought of the possible scenarios. All, of course, being somewhat related to her beloved shoujo mangas.
Hei-Lin paused as she glanced at the sky. It was getting dark out. She didn't realize she'd been wondering around for all that long. Then again, it was almost winter. Nights were longer than days, so it was bound to get dark early. However, everyone seemed to be heading towards the same general place: The Joker.
It was the top hangout place for the students at night, and it happened to be where Hei-Lin was currently heading. She was ashamed, and a little embarrassed, to say she hadn't been there yet. The fact was quite surprising, for a few reasons actually. First, many may find it amazing she went a whole semester NOT going there. Second, it was somewhat well-known Hei-Lin had an obsession with cute boys. And the central of all students, attractive or not, was The Joker. It was the perfect opportunity for her to kill two birds with one stone. She'd get to meet all sorts of boys, and get to go to the dance club as well.
Arriving at her destination, she could hear the music blaring, even from outside the door. Entering, the noise was even louder. But Hei-Lin didn't really mind it all too much. She didn't personally enjoy it, but it was tolerable. To start the night off, she first decided to get a drink before scouting the dance floor.
Approaching the bar, she looked at the bar tenders there. Her eyes locked onto a handsome, dark haired man. He had glasses on, with formal clothing, and seemed to be doing nothing and waiting on no one. This man was a bishounen straight from a manga she hadn't read yet. Hei-Lin smiled. She didn't need to go on the dance floor yet. She's got a bartender to talk to.
Taking a seat in his general area, she leaned forward and asked,

I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
In his opinion, the waiters were very lucky. All of the ladies, and the young men, seemed to have a preference for the tables tonight. He had to pour a drink for someone coming of the dance floor once or twice but for the most part, he was only busy dishing out drinks to the waiters when they came back for more. Usually, they'd do it themselves but he figured he'd lend a hand since he had nothing else to occupy his time. For him, it was a very slow shift.
Still, he couldn't really complain. The night being slow meant that he could get some homework done. He probably wasn't supposed to do anything other than polish up glasses and serve drinks but you could only do so much. Besides, it wasn't like he planned on ignoring customers or anything like that. On the contrary, he still payed very close attention to what was going on around him.
After pulling a notebook, textbook, and pencil from his bag under the counter, he set them at the end of the bar by the wall. A spot that was out of the way of the customers but still gave him a great view of the door, the whole bar, most of the tables, and the dance floor. With his book open and his notebook ready for him to write in, he moved away for a moment so that he could make himself a soda. He sat the soda on a napkin next to his book just as the door opened up again.
Akira didn't think much of it, figuring the girl would head to a table or move towards the dance floor. That wasn't the case though. As she sat down at the bar, not far from where he was currently standing, he moved to stand in front of her and pulled a glass from a shelf under the counter. He was actually rather pleased that his first customer in just under an hour was a good looking young lady. Seemed his luck wasn't completely rotten tonight after all.
A soft chuckle slipped passed his lips when she placed her order. "Sorry sweetheart, not Jade Tea here." A grin formed upon his lips despite the 'bad news' he had given. But specific types of tea weren't something they had behind the bar, for the most part at least. "Will Green Tea or Sweet Tea work for you?" Charm and flirtatiousness practically oozed from him now that he was in the presence of a customer, his homework forgotten entirely for the time being.

Who missed that crimson apple? Well it hung heavy on the tree above your head. This chaos, this calamity, this garden once was perfect, give your immortality to me; I'll set you up against the stars | A small pout made its way onto Hei-Lin's face. No Jade tea? What else was she supposed to drink? She'd never agree to take anything like soda or alcohol. If she wanted to talk to this guy more, she'd have to order something, not sit there like an idiot. Then, he listed off a few alternative options. A playful smirk replaced her earlier look. So, all hope wasn't lost after all.
In all honesty, she'd tried both previously, and couldn't really say one was better than another. Nor could she simply ask for him to choose, as that would end all talking almost immediately. So, she settled with acting dumb and pretending she hadn't tried either one before. Then, perhaps she could think of a way to stay here without looking like some desperate chick. Since that would be plain embarrassing on her part.
"Oh, well, I've never actually had Green tea nor Sweet tea before. You wouldn't mind pouring me a little of both, would you?" she asked. This night was going to be more fun than she expected. Keeping this bartender's attention and leaving on good terms, or at least relatively good terms, was going to keep her busy for the most part. And all the time, she'd be in the company of this attractive man whom she was currently interested in.
By the end of this night, Hei-Lin mentally promised herself she would have this tender's name. She give her's as well, of course. And who knows, maybe she'd meet him again. She hoped so, it was a promising start to her second year, knowing people as good looking as him were wandering around.
In her mind, she was laughing, If only this man knew her thoughts, he'd prepare her tea, and get as far away as possible. But,God didn't give human's telepathy, so she had nothing to worry about. Unless, this bartender happened to be a mind reader despite it being un-normal. Then, she'd have to give him props for staying around. But by this point, her mind was simply wondering. There was almost no way this man was a mind-reader. That was just so out there, Hei-Lin literally shook her head of the thought. This bishounen bartender was what she should be focusing on. And, the tea he was preparing for her. | TAGGED: My Dear friend, Akira WORD COUNT: 387 LYRICS: wine red - the hush sound CREDIT: template created by KAO of OTE. |

I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
Not only was it his professional duty to keep up an air of friendliness and charm but it was also a personal duty for him. In the presence of customers, as well as attractive people in general, he always kept a smile on his face. After all, if he didn't appear friendly and approachable, he would get any business. And if he didn't attract some customers, well, he probably end up jobless. He wasn't going to let that happen.
Then again, he didn't have to work hard to keep up a sweet and charming smile. It actually came pretty natural for him. Or maybe it just seemed natural now because he had always done it? Either way, it was an immediate reaction when talking to other people. A reaction that never failed him. A smile would always work it's way to his lips, even if he wasn't in a very good mood. A good mood just made his eyes shine too.
After pulling out a second glass he placed them both atop the high counter in front of the girl and then reached into one of the mini-fridges below to pull out the two jugs of tea. One was sweet and the other was green. He, personally, preferred the sweet tea out of the two and he didn't really like green tea too much at all but that was just his opinion.
Akira poured some tea into both glasses, one kind of tea in each, until they were both about a third of the way full. Not too much but enough for someone to decided whether they liked it or not. He left both jugs on the lower counter so that they weren't in the way and propped up on the higher counter, hands on it's edge to hold him up. His ever-present smile widened a bit, into a playful little grin.
"I'm guessing a young lady like you would find the sweet tea more appealing." With a tilt of the head he added, "The tea isn't near as sweet as you though."
It wouldn't be long before he attempted to start up an actual conversation. That was something he did when he had people sitting at the bar. After all, if you talk to people, listen to their problems, cater to their needs, and generally make them feel comfortable, then chances are they'll come back. And he liked it when customers came back on a regular basis.
There were actually a few customers he saw nearly every night. He even knew what they always ordered and could have it out on the bar before they even sat down. He had been told that remembering customers and what they liked was a sign of a great employee. Well, he had been told 'bartender' but he figured it worked for many different lines of work. He could apply it to other lines of work, at least.

Who missed that crimson apple? Well it hung heavy on the tree above your head. This chaos, this calamity, this garden once was perfect, give your immortality to me; I'll set you up against the stars | Hei-Lin waited as the bartender silently poured her the two drinks. While he did so, she went over in her head two things: What she was going to order and how she'd get his name and introduce herself. First, she decided to figure out what drink she wanted. As she's thought before, she liked them both. Choosing would be a bit hard, and a simple game of eeni-meeni-minni-moe could decide, or perhaps a random pick could work too. Yet, somehow, she wanted to make an actual decision. a somewhat logical one too. Mentally, she picked out her preferences between the two.
On one hand, she liked Green tea for the authenticity of it. It gave her a pleasant feeling and she felt relaxed drinking it. Also, it was the drink she had second most often back in China, the first being Jade tea. Obviously, Jade tea was not available, less she not have to decide. But back to her current debate. Green tea, in short, was good for feeling rather than taste. It tasted fine, if not to misunderstand her, however taste couldn't be considered its main focus.
Sweet tea, on the other hand, was well, sweet. It tasted good, and rather delicious in Hei-Lin's opinion. But it didn't give off the same feel as Green tea. Perhaps she should go with Sweet tea merely because she wasn't particularly wanting relaxation at the time, and good taste was what normally was wanted at clubs such as these. Although Hei-Lin didn't exactly consider herself completely normal, in a sense.
Her decision, at this point, was going back and forth, as well as, frankly, nowhere. She was so involved in it, though, that she hadn't noticed the drinks had been poured and served already. A small wave of embarrassment hit her and her face took on a light shade of pink. She must have looked like a complete fool just sitting there with drinks in front of her and doing nothing at all! Making her decision quick, she concluded in just winging it and seeing which one she preferred at the moment.
Taking one of the glasses, she could immediately tell it was the Sweet tea. How she wasn't so sure, but she could just tell. Maybe it had to do with her refusal to drink nothing but tea, but she didn't dwell on it long. She took a few sips of it, and confirmed her assumptions. It was indeed Sweet tea. The overall taste was a dead giveaway the second it hit her lips. When she was down, she set the glass down and picked the other one, with Green tea in it, up. She drank this one as well, and decided she was in the mood for Sweet tea.
Smiling, she said,
"I think I like the Sweet tea better. However, both were pleasing in their own sense. If I ever come back, I'll be sure to get Green tea instead. Perhaps you'll be here then as well."
In waiting for his response, Hei-Lin's thoughts drifted back to her second topic: How to get his name. She was fairly certain if she kept conversation up, the matter would present itself eventually and she would accomplish her goal. But just letting it happen didn't seem nearly as fun or appealing. No, she needed some kind of clever way to get it out of him. Just exactly what that way was was not what she knew yet. This whole matter would be unnecessary, however, if he decided to ask for her name first and introduce himself. That would be fun and, if she came back, as she was sure she would, would benefit her in asking for this man's particular assistance. Yet, she decided to to go so deep into the subject. Lest she get lost in thought again and not hear whatever he had to say.

I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
The young man wondered what she could be thinking so hard about when he finished pouring her the two types of tea. She didn't seem to realize that the beverages were both ready for her to drink. The best guess he could make as to her train of thought was which glass to try out first and that didn't seem like a terribly important decision to him. Then again, he wasn't the one that had to chose between the two so he couldn't say anything on the matter.
Finally, though, the young lady before him picked up one of the glass and drank the tea it contained, pausing only a short time before doing the same with the other. Normally people were a bit hesitant when trying something knew but he saw no hesitation at all as the girl downed both types of tea. Perhaps she was the type that enjoyed trying new thing? Or maybe she had actually had these types of tea before?
It didn't truly matter to him either way. If she liked trying new things, that was great, because he did as well. And if she had tried both teas before, well, he was sure she had a reason for hiding that. Not that he could come up with a reason, himself, but she must have had one. You know, if she fell into that second category.
The bartender was a bit curious as to which category she fell under but it wasn't something he'd bother trying to find out. After all, it didn't really matter to him which it was. Instead of wasting anymore time thinking about that, he picked up the jug of sweet tea and refilled the girls glass before putting both jugs back into the fridge. He propped himself back up on the counter, moving down the bar (towards his things) just enough that he could cross his arms on the higher counter without being in his customers' way.
"I'm here every night around this time," he said, a smirk taking over the grin that had been on his face as he looked over at her. "I'll be looking forward to your visits."
Maybe he'd have another regular customer to look forward to seeing. Another person to chat with while they were hanging around at The Joker and another set of orders to memorize. He already knew what to have on the table the next time he saw her walk in the door. He'd just have to hope she still planned to order the green tea when that day came along.
But she couldn't be considered one of his regulars if he didn't know her name. Even more so if she didn't know his. Not that they needed each others' names for any great reason. It wasn't like she'd be going around telling people who her regular bartender at The Joker was. Likewise, he wouldn't be going around telling people the name of one of his regular customers.
It was more of a conversational thing, knowing one another's name. Knowing the person you were speaking to made conversing easier. Not that he'd have any trouble with that one way or the other. Some people did have problems with it though, so it was better to be safe. "The names Akira. Akira Saito. If I'm not at the bar when you come in, just tell the other bartender who you're here for and they'll get me from the back room."

Who missed that crimson apple? Well it hung heavy on the tree above your head. This chaos, this calamity, this garden once was perfect, give your immortality to me; I'll set you up against the stars | If Hei-Lin had actually spaced out, she would have so regretted it. Number one, she would have looked like a complete fool again. Number two, and most importantly, she would have missed a bit of crucial information: his name. Akira Saito… Not a bad name, in her opinion. It seemed to fit nicely with his appearance: elegant, yet a bit mysterious as well. Along with his name, it was nice to know he was a gentlemen-type. He had to be, considering all of the blatant facts. First, he looked the part, or maybe it was just the normal attire for a bartender. Secondly, he had the audacity to offer his name first, and inform her on ways to reach him if she did happen to come back. She would. And lastly, he had a pleasant, almost mandatory in standard conversation, comment on looking forward to seeing her again. It wasn’t huge, and, as stated above, was somewhat of a mandatory for an employee towards a customer, but Hei-Lin just happens to appreciate the small comments such as those. Of course, they were important in mangas too. They were somewhat of a foreshadowing to future meetings. Ones she’d look forward to.
Picking up her glass of sweet tea, she took a few sips of it before voicing her response.
“That’s nice to know, and convenient for me as well. I’m a student here a Kingdom University, and these hours are usually around the time I’m free,” she said. With this in mind, she decided that for the rest of the year, after finishing homework and any other school work she may have, she’d come straight to the bar. She’d switch off between sweet and green tea each day. Already, her new year was developing a promising routine.
“Also, it’s nice to meet you, Akira. I’ll be sure to remember that name for the next time I come. It’ll be easier for me to get my green tea that way. My name’s Hei-Lin Haruki, which I’m sure you’ll memorize in no time at all.”
If she did become accustomed to coming here, for this particular employee, he would definitely memorize her name. Heck, even people she’s only seen once knows who she is. Not by her real name, but more as “the obsessed, crazy otaku fangirl.” Now, Hei-Lin didn’t take the name to heart. She was an otaku, and she admitted to being a bit crazy. Also, it was no secret she was indeed, obsessed with her bishounens. So, the name was actually quite fitting, and no offensive at all, to her at least. Those who were weak at heart and can’t accept other’s opinions, well, then maybe it was a bit offensive. But what’s what is what, so she just went with it. Soon enough, Akira would get to know her and her otaku ways better, and what happens from then on is solely dependent on his personality, a personality that Hei-Lin, in turn, would get to know better as well. Taking another sip of her tea, a small smile was set upon her face. This encounter was meaningful. She just knew it.

I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
Students from the University seemed to frequent The Joker more than he might have thought when he'd first visited the place. Then again, it was pretty close to the school and it was a dance club. So maybe he should have expected to see more students than he did? Not that he could just tell who was a student and who wasn't, the place was frequented by many different types of people. A lot of the people that came in were probably students, actually.
Quite a few of his fellow third years came in once in a while and he recognized a second year or two now and then. He didn't know very many of the first years yet but that was to be expected, really. This girl was one of the students he didn't recognize from school, no matter what year she fell into.
"I'm a student there as well but I don't recall seeing you around campus." The grin never left his face and, though he continuously looked around the club, he mostly kept his attention on the girl with whom he was having a conversation. "May I ask what you're majoring in?"
It may have sounded strange that he was asking the question that way but he knew it was better to be safe with semi-personal questions. After all, he was working. That, and some people didn't like answering questions relating to school and/or themselves. It was best to play things safe and ask a question in a way that sounded polite and gave room to be left unanswered without the other person feeling rude or anything like that.
Akira's grin turned into a smirk that was probably better suited for times other than work or school. We'll call it his sultry smirk because, let's face it, all of his smirks are sexy so sexy smirk wouldn't work. Anyway, his grin turned into a sultry smirk that shouldn't really be adorning his face while he was working. He couldn't really help it though. Okay, he could have if he'd wanted to but it was a little to late to bother with that now.
"I've already got it memorized, Hei-Lin Haruki." It wasn't a lie, either. He found it very easy to remember names as well as associate them with faces so if he saw her again he'd know who it was right off the bat. It would be the same if he heard her name somewhere, he'd automatically know who they were talking about. "And it's a pleasure to meet you, too, Miss. Haruki."

Who missed that crimson apple? Well it hung heavy on the tree above your head. This chaos, this calamity, this garden once was perfect, give your immortality to me; I'll set you up against the stars | Hei-Lin absent-mindedly stirred her tea. She took another sip of it, and then, Akira started talking again. This caught her attention.
"So you're a student too, huh? Well, I can efectively say I've never seen you either. Guess the term of a small world isn't necessarily true; especially if two people at the same university have never seen each other. Also, I happening to be majoring in psychology. What about yourself?" she asked. Briefly, she wondered whether she'd have any classes with him. That would be fun, and give her something else to look forward to. Besides the educational and mind enriching learning that always went on in classrooms ('cept drawing but that isn't the point here >.>).
If he did happen to have any classes in common, she pondered why she'd never seen him before. Surely she would have had to notice someone as good-looking as him at some point during the year. Or, as she thought a bit harder about her attitude as a first year, maybe she really didn't. If he hadn't made himself properly known, she wasn't exactly scouting out boys like she usually would. Well, it's nice to have something, or rather, someone, new in the classes. It would really suck if it was all the same, anyways. she thought.
At the mention of her name, Hei-Lin smiled and tilted her head a bit.
"Well then, Akira Saito, lets say I've memorized your name as well." Her pointer finger poked her head in the way people did when mentioning remembrance of things. (< awkward line) "If I didn't, well, how else could I get my tea without wasting all that energy ordering? So, Mr. Saito, while I get courtesy to the customer and all, feel free to simply call me Hei-Lin. 'Miss Haruki' just doesn't sound right to me."
That was entirely true. Hei-Lin wasn't a big fan of formal names, it just didn't feel right. she couldn't understand how teachers dealt with it. Well, actually, maybe she could. Professors had higher authority and were usually older than all of the students. Hei-Lin had neither, besides the older part, but that was only for first years! If there was one thing Hei-Lin would never want to say, it was that she was old. If someone dared to call her so, well, they'd have to be a cute manga-looking boy to escape unharmed. she wasn't a black belt martial artist for nothing.

I remember black skies the lightning all around me, I remember each flash as time began to blur.
Moving back over to his things, which still kept him rather close to Hei-Lin, he propped himself up and looked over the page the book was one. Only the second page of the first chapter. He glanced over at the girl with a grin on his face. "I'm a business major," he said before lifting up the book he had sitting open on the counter, showing the words printed on it's cover, 'Entrepreneurship'. "With minors is psychology and sociology. Didn't add psychology to my list until this year though."
The only class that had actually started up already was his sociology class, but he figured it go ahead and do a little work for the business class he'd be attending this term. He had gotten the book from the library earlier that day and, even though the class was going to be a breeze for him, he'd decided to go through the first chapters assignments. With any luck, that'd mean he'd have no homework the first week. Or at least for the first few days.
Akira was about to write something down in his notebook, an answer to one of the questions, when the door opened. The newest customer sat down at the bar. There was another bartender on duty but he was currently in the back, so he headed over to take the mans order, holding a hand up as he passed the girl (a wordless motion that said something like 'hold that though'), "I'll be right back."
After taking the order, pouring up the drink, and a little bit of conversation, he headed back down the bar to Hei-Lin and his books. He jotted down his answer before picking up where their conversation had left off. "I'll call you whatever it is that you want me to, so long as you just call me Akira." His ever present smile tilted more towards a smirk again as he looked over at her from the corner of his eye, chin propped in his palm and his elbow on the counter.
To much formality, though he couldn't say it actually bothered him, just didn't sound right sometimes. Of course, when it came to his customers, he'd never even consider dropping formality altogether. He would prefer they simply called him by his given name, rather than his surname, but he tended to stick with their surnames. He'd be willing to make an exception this time around though.
