Uen had been in many situations that had gotten messy while on duty as a groomer here at the pet store - dogs jumping out of the bath with soap on, dogs jumping out of the bath with just water on, animals escaping their collars and jumping off the table when getting a shave - it had all happened to her before, and though annoying, it didn't deter her from loving what she did. The only part she hated about her job was when she had to clean up, but that was fine; she was a quick and efficient cleaner, and the time with the animals made up for it. Uen had the pleasure of grooming not only the pets of owners but also the pets in the store who had yet to be bought. Just to keep them spiffied up for purchase.
The grooming room had pale blue walls, just a color to keep the place from looking dull, with white trim on the wall just above the white tiles and little bubble and other bath-time decals on the wall. The wall that separated the grooming room from the rest of the pet store had a large one-way window making up the majority of the upper part of the wall; this allowed kids, owners, and potential buyers to look in on the pets being cared for, and also for the managers to check in on the grooming staff without having to enter the rather noisy environment. Just beneath the window was a long white counter on which the grooming orders were kept. To the far left of the room when coming from the door beside the window was the bathing station which consisted of two tubs, each with shower heads and soap containers, as well as waterproof brushes for in-bath tangle removing. On the back wall was the grooming station (which included the trimming). Every other open space up against the wall was more counter-space for cages of animals who were groomed but whose owners hadn't returned to pick them up.
Uen was at work in this place now; she had already finished nearly all the pets in her shift. She'd just placed an iguana in its little carrying cage with shredded paper bits in the bottom when one of the grooming assistants brought in a giant sheepdog with burrs all over its thick, shaggy cream-colored fur. Uen felt a grin slip over her face. "Hi there, Vincentino!" she squeaked, kneeling down. Instantly his long, straight, fluffy tail began to wag, matted clumps of fur wiggling along with it. Uen stood up straight and accepted the red store leash which the assistant handed to her, and the dog known as Vincentino began to pace at Uen's feet, eager to get the grooming process started. With the other hand, Uen grabbed the clip board from the assistant's hand, looking over the order briefly. "Just the usual, then, huh Vincey-boy?"
Uen set the clipboard on the counter beside the grooming room's door, and she walked him to the back room; he crouched down as he reached the grooming table and leaped onto the blue quilt-like surface, his giant pink tongue hanging from his mouth as Uen placed the leash on the hook to keep him from jumping down. She grinned at him and scratched the top of his head before asking, "How on Earth did you get so many burrs, silly?" Uen grabbed the brush from the grooming utensil container and began to do her duty, brushing all the knots out of his fur and picking out as many burrs as she could get, tossing them into the waste bucket just beside the grooming table. Once all the major knots had been brushed out and a majority of the burrs had been removed, she switched to a comb, brushing the coat even more thoroughly and getting all the burrs out. Overall, it was an easy job and he was done quickly. Her grooming duties were done: break time!
Vincentino jumped off the table and was placed in a cage to await his owner's return, and in the meantime she was going to go out and watch the early evening crowd gather. She'd packed a little snack, but she was planning on going out for a better dinner once her shift was done and Down The Rabbit Hole was closed up for the night. She loved this job. Uen stepped up to the door, removing her red apron that had the store logo on it. She stepped out into the main store and looked around. Sure, it was her job to be a groomer, but she was always willing to help anyone who had a question, and if anyone would have a question about animals it'd be the evening crowd. Someone always found her on her break time. | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Texia stared at the store's sign: Down the Rabbit Hole. It wasn't a bad name, she concluded, and walked in. She didn't even take in her surroundings. Her only concern was finding the fish. She let out a small giggle. Fish were just so funny! The way they looked, their colorful scales, the little bubbles they blew from time to time, it was all just amusing to her. The only down side was the noise. Whether the dogs' barks were heard or not, birds, hamsters, mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, whatever other animals happen to be present in the store, all made some sort of noise. And Texia happened to hate loud noises.
Initially growing up in a very quiet environment where yelling, screaming, or talking loudly was prohibited, her ears were sensitive to all the loud noises people made regularly. Also, they just seemed to irritate her. A peaceful, quiet, serene setting was ideal to her. How could people stand to disrupt that? Even to the point of liking the disruptions! Texia shook her head. Now was not time to speculate her misgivings of the world. Hating people was not a good way to start off her life outside her previously sheltered life. The familiar sound of fish tanks snapped Texia out of her thoughts. The small, shiny fish immediately caught her attention, as she got on her knees to be with eye level of them. A happy smile took over her face and she just knelt there, watching the fish, unaware of anyone, or anything for that matter, other than the fish, in the shop.

At this point in time, everything looked peaceful. No one looked like they were wondering anything. To be honest, no one even looked interested in the animals; there was a lot more to animals than just their adorable and unique faces, especially if someone was interested in being an owner. Having a pet wasn't just keeping it in your house and playing with it when you feel like it. There was a lot more to it. Uen couldn't stress enough how big of a responsibility it was to have a pet. You needed to know what it needed in order to live a long, healthy life, such as its diet and its exercise needs, among other things. But that wasn't the point; right now, it was snack time!
Uen made her way to the tiny break room in the back of the store and entered it quickly, making her way to the refrigerator and grabbing out her sack lunch that consisted of Wal-Mart brand raspberry yogurt, a peanut butter sandwich, a pack of tropical Gushers, and a box of apple juice. She freaking loved these simple meals. She was such a child in that fashion, but she didn't mind. Maybe her pleasure with such simple meals came from her drug use? She didn't really know. She didn't know how much she cared, either. Food was food whether it was a luxurious meal (which she didn't want to buy anyways) or a measly sandwich.
She scarfed her meal down like the pig she was, then made her way right out to the main part of the store, into the loudness that was the barking of dogs and the mewling of cats and the squawking of birds and the squeaking rodents and the... well, the silence of lizards, and the bubbling of the fish's tanks. Now that Uen thought of it, she hadn't been in the fish department of the store since she'd gotten the job sometime during her First Year. Looking back to the grooming department and seeing all her animals gone and no new customers waiting to be cared for, she resolved to go over to the fish department for a while, just to look around and help anyone who needed her. She had her own fish at home; she'd gotten them all from here, and they were very well cared for.
Uen wandered into the section, and a girl caught her eye. She was a little bit younger than Uen was - maybe she was a First Year? - and she was staring at the fish like she was completely enthralled by the simplicity. The fish that she was staring at were the tetras, the fish that glowed very brightly, like neon lights. It was very cool that she had such interest in it. Uen knelt down beside the girl and smiled at her, though she did not attempt to bring her attention from the tank. She just knelt and watched as the girl watched, then after a while Uen said, "These guys are just beautiful, aren't they? I have three of them at my tank at home." | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Texia was shocked. Someone else was in the store too?! Her attention immediately snapped from the fish to the stranger. She looked much older than her, and judging by her appearance, worked at this shop. She had said something about having fish at home, although why would she need fish at home when they were right here? And what use was it to tell her?Naturally, she voiced this thought.
"Why would you keep fish at home? There right here for you to see, especially if you work here, or at least, I assume you do. Besides, is there something that you wish for me to know, due to telling me about your fish? It seems to irrelevent information to me." It truly confused her. Another thing she'd have to learn about people: they voiced unnecessary information about themselves. Her parents had taught her only to say her name in greeting people, and give out information only when asked, as more would seem excessive and pushy. Obviously, not many other people were taught this, or they chose to ignore it and be excessive. Also, didn't this person know she was busy looking at the fish? There was no need to interrupt her, unless, of course, she wished to ask if she needed help, being she worked there, on Texia's assumption. Then again, she would have asked for help if she needed any, but Texia decided to just disregard her thoughts. they were only confusing her more about the behavior of people. So, she waited for this strange girl's reply.

It took a moment for the girl to reply to her question; she'd clearly needed to process what Uen had told her. Her eyes snapped up to instantly lock with Uen's blazing black sapphire gaze, and for a moment they just stared at each other before the younger girl spoke. "Why would you keep fish at home? They're right here for you to see, especially if you work here, or at least, I assume you do. Besides, is there something that you wish for me to know, due to telling me about your fish?" For a moment, Uen was taken aback, and for half of that moment she felt anger flaring up inside her chest. She stifled it immediately; she wouldn't let this weird girl ruin her happy job.
"It seems to irrelevent information to me," the girl finished shortly. Uen blinked. That was a mouthful she'd said; now, how to respond? She began slowly, "Well, see, I'm not always allowed to be here. The store has open and closed hours - most do." To herself, she added, And if you'd get your head out of your ass then I'm sure you'd have known that. "I've always adored fish. They're so quiet and peaceful and just fun to watch. They can't be stuck up little punks like cats, and you don't have to do much picking up after them like dogs who urinate on your carpet and smell nasty when they're wet, and they aren't loud like birds."
To be honest, this brat kind of got on Uen's nerves, but at the same time she may or may not be a customer and she may or may not bring profit to the store, so she had to be civil - friendly, even. It's what the place expected of her, and she expected more of herself than any of the employers here. Uen shrugged. "I have nothing to say. I just felt like being friendly." She stood up again, pulling her long blonde hair back into a low ponytail. She turned away, beginning to wander down the aisle of fish, and she commented, "If you need any assistance with anything, you can feel free to ask any of us workers here. We're happy to answer any questions you may have." I'm such a good person. | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Texia stared at the worker as she got up to leave. Somehow, it seemed that she was surprised by her response. Why would that be? She was being honest, and those were her thoughts. The truth can't be all that surprising, can it? Also, this worker was trying to be friendly by informing her of the fish. Texia agreed with her. Fish were indeed better than cats, dogs, and birds. Better than any pet actually.
"I agree. You seem to voice my entire perspective on fish. They are indeed adorable and fun to watch. I dislike all other pets. Thank you for trying to be friendly, it is appreciated." Whether the worker had stopped to listen or not, well, Texia didn't seem to notice. Instead, she simply decided to voice her thoughts. Afterall, this was a civil person, and she'd have to interact more with people, so she should take advantage of this situation.
"Closing hours and opening hours? Why not be here all day? Otherwise, customers will pass it by and no profit comes from that. And isn't it a businesses purpose to make money? I've never understood why all businesses aren't always open. Mother and Father never explained that properly to me. Oh, and if I need help, I will surely ask for your assistance. Thank you for having an open enough mind to mention that to me. By the way, my name is Texia Shigura, I'm a first year at the Kingdom University and am an art major. It's nice to meet you," Texia said. She felt she needed to give a proper introduction, which she hadn't said before. Then again, perhaps this worker wasn't listening. Either way, Texia decided to just go back to looking at the fish.
"You fish are all so pretty. Your quiet, cute, colorful, shiny, and just perfect animals." she whispered to the little pets swimming in the tank, though she doubted they could hear or even understand her. It was the thought that counts.

Perhaps the girl was just like that; didn't Autism or whatever cause people to act so oddly antisocial? Of course, Uen herself was antisocial in a work environment - maybe this girl was the same way. Maybe she was antisocial when she was focused on something. Or, maybe she was that way all the time. Well, Uen would never know. It didn't really matter; it was just a customer, and chances are she'd never see this girl again. The girl began to speak and Uen stopped, pretending to organize some beta food on the shelf just one aisle away from where the girl knelt in front of the fish tank.
"You seem to voice my entire perspective on fish. They are indeed adorable and fun to watch. I dislike all other pets," the girl told Uen. To be honest, Uen wasn't entirely opposed to all other animals. She rather liked kittens with their round bellies and their clumsy run-around-your-ankles-so-you-fall nature, and she enjoyed the floppy feet of puppies and their big innocent eyes. Birds, well, she didn't appreciate them as much, but she didn't hate them completely. The girl's next words slightly surprised Uen, but she did not react. Instead she checked the chart on a podium that told when the fish had last been fed and by who. "Thank you for trying to be friendly, it is appreciated."
The girl continued to speak, and though Uen lent her ears to this strange girl, she went about her business, grabbing up the food bucket and walking to where the tanks of fish began, giving a desired amount to each tank of fish. Some tanks held up to one hundred fish, and others had as few as one; angel fish were known to kill each other very violently, so they could only keep one to an aquarium. Those specific fish got less food than the others, but that didn't really matter since it was enough for them. The girl rambled on, talking about how she thought it was weird that businesses never stayed open 24 / 7. To be honest, Uen didn't understand it either. Some questions didn't need to be answered; she'd treat the girl's questions as though the were rhetorical.
The girl went on to say that she'd certainly ask Uen for help if she needed it, and she thanked Uen for having an "open enough mind to mention that to her." This girl was freaking nuts. Still, Uen said nothing. She just continued walking down the aisle, feeding the numerous fish. The girl then introduced herself as Texia Shigura, a first year at Kingdom University. Uen's eyebrows raised slightly with surprise; she seemed rather young to be going to KU. Ah, well. A lot of people seemed younger, or older, than they really were. Uen replied softly as she continued feeding the fish, drawing slowly nearer and nearer to the girl who spoke, "I'm Uen Migoto, a Third Year at Kingdom University. I hope the school's been treating you alright thus far." If it hasn't, I don't wonder why, she added to herself.
She finally came to stand next to Texia, and after a moment it came time to feed the tetras. Uen knelt beside Texia again, and she offered the bucket to Texia. "You can feed the tetras, if you'd like. I'm sure they'd appreciate it." Uen was quiet again, and she thought, I wonder if she's had fish before? Seeing how much she likes them, I'd assume she has. Gotta be careful she doesn't give them too much food, though. I don't wanna get my ass busted because she throws in a handful and makes them shit their brains out. I don't want to have to pay for her mistakes. | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Apparently, the employee, Uen Migoto, was at Kingdom University as well. Texia decided if she was polite enough to introduce herself and show somewhat concern for Texia's treatment at school, she wasn't as bad as other people she had talked with.
"I'm treated fine. However, the professors seem to not like my arrivals in their classrooms. I was only three minutes and 56 seconds late to Drawing, and five minutes and three seconds late to Chemistry. Not much could be accomplished in such time so was it really necessary to be angry at me? I had been folding cranes at the park and happened to forget about my classes. At least I remembered to go at all; I could have skipped all together. But mother and father would be angry if I did that, so perhaps I couldn't." Texia replied. Then, she remembered Miss Migoto had offered to allow her to feed the fish. It seemed simple enough. And, she'd never had anything to give the fish in the river at the park, so maybe she could get food here to fed them here. Also, it would be good practice to do so for these fish. After all, she didn't have any prior experience with this, so she might as well learn.
"Yes, I would very much like to feed these fish. Thank you for the kind offer, Miss Uen Migoto."

Texia now seemed satisfied with the Third Year who'd apparently so rudely approached her; she began to grow calmer, or at least a tad bit more open to the thought of having a conversation with someone. Uen, for a moment, wondered what on earth was going through this strange First Year's head, but then she decided it was none of her business, and, to be blunt, she didn't care that much. She was always changing her mind after only half a moment of thought - it had saved her from countless disasters or conversations she didn't want to take part in. The girl replied, slowly at first, to Uen's query. She said that her Professors didn't appreciate how late she arrived to some of her classes.
That was actually pretty good time for a First Year. Uen, herself, was always early, but that was because her classes were late in the day, so she didn't sleep past her alarm clock (which, in her First Year when she'd had a less customizable schedule) had happened quite frequently. It'd been much better during Second Year. The girl wondered why her Professors could be so angry when she only missed approximately five minutes. Uen smirked. "Professors believe that if they can instill a no-tardiness policy in the First Year students then they will avoid lateness in the following years. Professors of the Second Year students give up after the first week, however. Just hang in there." Texia continued, saying that she easily could've skipped class, and they should be grateful she hadn't. Well, that was an idea that Uen could appreciate.
Texia then replied to Uen's offer of letting her feed the fish; she said she'd like to very much. However, Uen was a tad surprised when the girl seemed to hesitate. With her love of fish, Uen had assumed that Texia had experience with fish. The way that Texia responded said otherwise; Uen reached into the bucket and grabbed a large pinch of the fish food between her thumb and her index and middle finger. She said, "Just do what I did; take a good sized pinch between your fingers and drop the food in the gap between the lid and the side of the tank. It'll be just enough to give all the fish enough food to last them until their next feeding." | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Texia liked this Uen. She seemed nice enough, and if everyone on campus was like her, then maybe she wouldn't have as hard a time as she imagined talking to people. And about the school matters, well, she wouldn't be on time for any of her classes. The professors would soon learn that. With her immediate sense of time, she could arrive early for class, but she didn't want to make a habit of it. When she's in the park, whether she's folding origami or watching the fish, she gets easily distracted and forgets about her classes all together. However, after years of private tutoring and scoldings by her tutors, classes find their way into Texia's mind somehow. When her professors get accustomed to this routine, she can feel a bit better about walking into class. This was never possible before, as her parents had strictly informed all of her tutors that she needed to arrive on time for sessions. Back to the present, Texia looked at Uen, and smiled.
"Thank you, Miss Uen Migoto. I never knew how to feed fish before now, your instruction is greatly appreciated. I'd like to purchase some of this fish food after, If you wouldn't mind." She then took a pitch of the food, and dropped it into the tank. As she watched the fish all head to the surface to eat it, she giggled. This soon turned to soft laughter, and she was slowly losing awareness of everything else around her. Her mind solely focused on the fish, she watched as they continued eating. Fish were just so cute.

The strange girl then gave Uen a rather friendly smile - what a huge difference appealing to her interests had made - and thanked her for demonstrating how to feed the fish properly. She stated that she was interested in purchasing some fish food once she had finished feeding the tetras. Good, so my efforts aren't entirely for nothing. I won't get entirely busted for letting a customer feed the fish. She reached into the food bucket and grabbed the perfect amount for the number of tetras; she was a natural at this, or at least a natural at following an example. Uen told her, "Once I finish feeding the other fish then I'll get you some fish food, Miss Shigura."
Uen watched as the food fell into the water of the tank and the tetras swam up to get their fill, satisfied with the work done here. Texia already seemed to be forgetting about the rest of the world around her now, so Uen grabbed the bucket of food once more and stood up, continuing down the line to feed the many tanks of splendorous fish that filled the shelves. Column by column she shuffled sideways, giving each their fill and checking to ensure that the tanks were in order; finally she reached the end and she made her way back to the podium to set down the bucket and to log that she'd fed the fish at this time. She looked back to Texia, and there she was, leaned up so her breath almost fogged up the glass, looking absolutely enthralled by the fish. She seemed so sweet.
Uen remembered that Texia had requested to purchase some food. She told Texia, "There are actually several sizes and brands of fish food. How many fish are there and how often do you plan to feed them with this food?" Uen turned again to the podium, grabbing a binder that had a list of various fish and aquarium care products listed in it, as well as their prices. She flipped to the food tab and went to the fish section of it, searching for which brand could get Texia the best bang for her buck (wasn't that a funny phrase?). The generic brand was significantly cheaper than other brands, but Uen knew that even the generic fish didn't like it; it just didn't seem to appeal to their stomachs as much as the other brands did. The Purina fish food brand actually wasn't too expensive, and that seemed to be the favored brand of most of the fish in the store. | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

"There are actually several sizes and brands of fish food. How many fish are there and how often do you plan to feed them with this food?" Uen's sudden talking, or at least it seemed sudden to Texia, snapped her attention away from the fish. Brands? Sizes? Hm, at least one thing her parents taught her was useful.
"The biggest one you have would be preferable, and the most expensive brand as well. I'm not sure how many fish are in the river at Amaryllis Park, but there are a lot and I go there every day," Texia responded, looking up at Uen with big bright eyes. Fish were just about one of the only things that made her extremely happy. So, it was only natural she'd want the best for them. One rule her parents always followed was the most expensive brand is best, and they were on no shortage of money, so they always offered Texia anything high-class, so to speak. Earlier, she'd had thoughts of what she was going to do with all the money her parents supplied her with, but that question was now answered: she'd use it on fish food! And origami paper, of course. Just where she would get that is something she didn't know. Maybe I'll ask Uen, she seems to know a lot.
"Oh, Miss Uen Migoto,, where would I find origami paper as well?" she asked. Texia was starting to get very excited. If she could get fish food here, origami paper somewhere, and have access to Amaryllis Park, she'd have a perfect place to go in her free time! She may be a bit more late than usual to class, but that wasn't one of Texia's first priorities. Fishes' lives were more important than learning, after all, they were living creatures! Life is generally more important than school, it's just common sense. To Texia, at least.

She did seem awfully fond of fish; not only that, but the way she'd acted at first, stuck up almost, had led Uen to believe that, perhaps, this girl was used to the rich life. Most kids here at Kingdom University were rich, or that's how it had seemed to Uen. The girl asked for the biggest size of the most expensive brand. Uen actually laughed at this. The most expensive brand isn't always the best brand, Uen thought to herself, though she really had no reason to argue with Texia. First of all, she was a paying customer. Second of all, it was actually a fact in this case that the most expensive fish food was the best.
"As you wish, Texia," Uen replied as she wandered down one of the side aisles, looking up and down the shelves to find the biggest container with the most expensive price. She looked at the most expensive for a long moment. It had some funny name that she couldn't pronounce; however, she'd heard a lot of good things about it from people who worked for aquariums from every world. Apparently the ingredients were all natural and caused very good health and quick growth in the fish. It was a very sustaining feed, and it was very expensive, as well. It seemed to be just what Texia would want. As she knelt down to grab the container and bring it over to Texia, the girl spoke again.
”Where would I find origami paper as well?” the girl asked curiously. Uen heaved the ten pound bucket - and that was pretty heavy, considering fish feed was all light, airy flakes - into her lap and strained to stand, thinking carefully on Texia’s question. She suggested, ”Well, I believe that there’s an arts and crafts store somewhere in town. I’m not really sure where, but I know they have good prices and a lovely selection of papers of every sort. I bet you could find a whole package of them there.” She brought the bucket over to Texia and set it beside the girl. ”This is the biggest bucket of the most expensive brand we have. I’ve heard a lot of good things, so I’m sure that the river fish will appreciate it.” | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]

Uen's laughter confused Texia greatly. Did she say something funny? Getting the biggest and best brand was what everyone did for their pets, right? Well, technically, the river fish weren't her pets, but they were animals she cared for so it must count to some degree. Uen replied to her, and proceeded to go and get the fish food. Or, at least Texia highly assumed she was. After voicing her concern on an arts and crafts store, she was delighted to know there was one somewhere.
Life t this University officially became better than life at her manor. By so many degrees. She heard Uen bringing over her fish food. As she set it down, Texia's eyes started to sparkle. The river fish will have to like this! She broke out into a small grin. Now, she could at least repay the fish for entertaining her. And, she could have a sort of makeshift pet. That meaning even though they weren't really her pets, they were still cared for/fed by her. She'd have pets, a quiet place to relax, and plenty of origami paper. When she finished her 1000 paper cranes, she knew what her wish would be: To stay at this university forever and never go back home. When her social skills improved, Texia could definitely live away from her parents. Besides, even if she has the level 0 in talking, she had three more semesters to raise it up! Then, she realized she'd been lost in thought.
"I am greatly pleased with this, Miss Uen. Thank you for getting it for me. How much would it be?" Texia asked. After purchasing this, what would she do next? She could continue to look at the fish, but she couldn't stay here all day. Even if she had to leave, Texia decided she would come back here again, or maybe she would meet Uen on campus. Whatever the situation may be, Texia was confident in meeting her first friend again. Or, maybe her second? The fish tended to go over all...

She was happy with the information she had been presented, as well as with the high quality fish food that Uen had selected for her to give to the fish in the river. Really, the contents of the fish weren't much different from the things that fish could get a hold of one their own. Like she'd said, they were just organic materials, because they needed proper nutrition, just like humans and other pets needed. Mostly, this feed consisted of oats and other vegetables, but it really wasn't anything too special. It just didn't have artificial ingredients that could have unnatural and unhealthy effects on the fish.
Texia spoke again and Uen's attention was brought to the present. Obviously they'd both gotten distracted with their little thoughts. The girl thanked her, and then she asked how much the cost was. She smirked and answered, "It's about $40 dollars. A little less than a ten gallon tank would cost. It's worth it for the fish, though." She laughed. "I'm sure our fish here would be happier and bigger if our managers would stop being such cheapos and get the good stuff. I mean, we don't exactly feed them artificial crap, but we could give them much better, and I wish we would." Uen smiled at Texia. "Do you like all fish? River fish, ocean fish, deep sea fish, fresh water fish? Goldfish?" | [atrb=style, width: 100px; vertical-align: center;]
